Well, hey there, men, and welcome back to the business of being dad. I'm your host, Rob Rohde, and I am so excited to dive into some great ideas on how to make this holiday season extra special for you and your family. So this episode, we're going to focus on really seizing the unique opportunity that the end of the year brings. It's the holiday season, winter break for the kids, families getting together, kids returning home from college, and so on. So this time of year can provide a great opportunity for connection and creating lasting memories with those we love and care about. So let's dive into this discussion and have a conversation about how we can make the most out of this time. Are you ready to create some memories? Let's go.

Rob Rohde:

When I think back to my childhood holidays, I barely remember any presents, but I do remember a couple of key things about Christmas. I remember spending Christmas Eve at my grandparents' house and how much I look forward to it. I remember my grandma working all day creating this huge spread of food. She would break out the fancy china, have candles lit and serve a late night dinner. And I remember as a child being fun and exciting. But I especially remember just being surrounded by some of my favorite people in the world, people that I really cared about and that I know cared about me as well. Another one of my favorite memories was days that I would spend baking cookies with my mom and my sisters. You know my mom would make a big event out of it, so there would be Christmas music in the background and we'd be laughing and joking around and everybody would be having fun and we'd be turning it into a game or a competition or whatever it might be, but we were just hanging out together and just spending time together. You know, it would be me teasing my sisters, all of us teasing my mom, my sisters giving it back at me, and it was just a great time of just hanging out and being together.

Rob Rohde:

Over the years, I found that the presence have faded from my memory, but the laughter, the joy and the comfort of being surrounded by people I care about, those memories have been etched in my mind forever, and sometimes, as adults, we forget about this. We spend way too much time trying to create these huge moments, these grand gestures. I know I've fallen into this trap as well, but the truth is it's the little things that I remember most, the quality time I spent with family and friends, the special moments that occurred naturally, just from my parents being present, and I'm sure it's the same for each of you, I'm sure it'll be the same for our kids. So let's talk about those little things. Let's talk about the little things we can start doing this year today in order to create an environment for those quality moments to naturally occur with our kids.

Rob Rohde:

Now we're going to talk about three ideas of how you can intentionally create the opportunity where quality time can take place. The first idea is to consider setting up a movie night. So I know a movie night is not some great, unique idea that nobody's ever heard of, but I want you to consider this. You could turn this into a weekly event over the holiday season where each of you and the family gets to take turns picking out the movie. But you can make it special by making snacks and breaking out the popcorn, the cookies and the hot chocolate, maybe throw a fire in the fireplace and enjoy a fun night together. There's something special about a holiday movie night that can create a certain ambiance, that can naturally lead to discussions and laughter, and I think it's just the environment where everyone is comfortable and relaxed. And when people are comfortable and relaxed and just spending time together over the course of that time, it creates this environment for deeper and meaningful conversations to take place. And even if that doesn't occur, even if you're just simply spending time together having fun, laughing, watching a show, that is incredibly memorable and that is a great moment for you and your family.

Rob Rohde:

So the second idea is to maybe embrace your creativity with a do-it-yourself project day. You can engage in a craft such as making or painting Christmas ornaments. You could bake Christmas cookies and then enjoy eating some of them together. You can make a gingerbread house, or you could even work together to create your annual photo Christmas card. All of these ideas present a chance to connect through the expression of creativity, and some could even result in a tangible keepsake that helps you capture the memory and something that you can see and reminisce about in future years.

Rob Rohde:

The third idea is to spend some time outside together as a family. Depending on your location, maybe this would be a winter hike, or perhaps it's a day at the park, or maybe it's even going sledding or building a snowman. Those can all be fun options that involve spending time together as a family, but being outside in the fresh air and with a change of scenery can be magical. There's just something about being outside, especially being together as a group outside, that just increases the positive energy and improves your mindset and outlook. So there you have it and here's your task for this week. Select one of these ideas. Maybe that's a movie night, maybe it's doing something creative as a family, or maybe it's an outdoor activity. But decide what you're going to do, schedule it on your calendar, dedicate time solely for those quality moments and make it a non-negotiable family commitment, and then you can add your little twist to it to make it your own and, last of all, have some fun. I think you'll really be surprised at how something that seems so simple can create these memories for you and your family. I'd really love to hear how your movie night or creative project or outdoor activity went. You can share your experiences with me in the comments or send me a message and I'll be sure to respond.

Rob Rohde:

As we work our way through this holiday season, remember this it's not about throwing a lot of money around or doing something huge. It's just about connection. That's it. It's as simple as that. It's about being committed to setting aside consistent time where you are present with your family. The holiday season provides a wonderful opportunity for you to do this, a wonderful opportunity to strengthen bonds with your kids and create these memories. So as you create these moments, remember these words from Maya Angelou, who said I've learned that people will forget what you said People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. As we wrap up this holiday episode, I want to wish you a wonderful week, a week filled of joy and laughter and unforgettable moments, and until next time.
